Is it worth upgrading on Cathay Pacific? The Mail pits premium economy against business class

Cathay Pacific’s flights between London Heathrow and Hong Kong are globally recognized for their premium services. But the eternal question prevails: Is it truly worth upgrading from premium economy to business class? To help answer this question, The Mail’s travel journalist Harriet Sime embarked on a quest. She meticulously compared Cathay Pacific’s premium economy and business class offerings, aiming to provide travelers with insight into what they are getting for their money.

Harriet began her journey in Cathay’s premium economy cabin. First impressions were promising. The seats, noticeably larger than those in standard economy, offered enhanced comfort with greater recline, additional legroom, and a cushy headrest. Each seat came equipped with a footrest and a personal entertainment system boasting a wide variety of movies, TV shows, and music. However, one of the surprising aspects was the experience with meal service. While the food quality did not disappoint, her wine was served in a paper cup, a minor but significant detail that detracted from the overall experience.

Transitioning to business class, Harriet noted the immediate leap in comfort and luxury. The seats were more akin to small suites, complete with lie-flat capabilities and ample privacy. The business class cabin featured a sophisticated design with mood lighting, larger entertainment screens, noise-canceling headphones, and an extensive selection of fine dining options. The quality of service elevated significantly, matched by the presentation of meals and beverages. Unlike the premium economy experience, wine and other drinks were served in elegant glassware, contributing to a more refined experience.

Harriet’s flying adventure revealed several key differences between the two classes. Comfort was a major factor. While premium economy offered a satisfactory amount of space and comfort, business class provided an extraordinary level of personal space and relaxation. Traveling in a fully lie-flat seat made a substantial difference, especially on long-haul flights like the nearly thirteen hours between London and Hong Kong.

Service quality was another major point of distinction. The attention to detail in business class was markedly superior. The flight attendants were more attentive, catering to all passengers with precision and care. Harriet reported that the difference in service felt personal and luxurious in business class compared to the somewhat standardized service in premium economy.

Food and drink offerings in business class were superior as well. The gourmet meals, coupled with an impressive selection of beverages served in proper glassware, enhanced the travel experience. In contrast, while premium economy did not fall short in the variety and taste department, the use of disposable (paper) cups for beverages like wine reflected a difference in the level of detail and care.

Another aspect deserving attention is the additional amenities provided in business class. Passengers enjoy access to dedicated lounges, priority boarding, additional baggage allowance, and even in-flight Wi-Fi. These conveniences collectively contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable travel experience, making it vastly different from premium economy.

However, Harriet acknowledged that upgrading to business class comes with a significant increase in cost. For many travelers, the price difference might be hard to justify, especially if budget constraints are involved. For those who can afford the upgrade or those flying for important business engagements, the benefits of business class can make the expense appear worthwhile.

Ultimately, the choice between premium economy and business class on Cathay Pacific boils down to individual preferences and budgetary considerations. For travelers seeking a balance of comfort and affordability, premium economy offers a considerable upgrade over standard economy. For those desiring the pinnacle of in-flight luxury and are willing to pay for it, business class arguably delivers a superior experience unmatched by most other offerings.

In Harriet Sime’s balanced assessment, both classes have their unique merits. Her insights reaffirm that while business class provides unparalleled luxury and personalized service, premium economy remains a solid choice for those who want enhanced comfort without breaking the bank. In the end, whichever class you choose, Cathay Pacific ensures a dedication to quality that will make your journey between London and Hong Kong memorable.
