18 Actors Who Got Fired And Replaced In The Middle Of Filming A Movie (And Why)

Hollywood productions are high-stakes environments where every detail counts. While actors might be well into their roles, sometimes changes have to be made. From personality clashes to creative differences and unforeseen circumstances, here are 18 actors who got fired and replaced in the middle of filming, along with the reasons why.

Claudia Wells, initially cast in 'Back to the Future,' and Eric Stoltz as the original Marty McFly, replaced due to height and comedic tone issues, respectively, showcasing mid-filming cast changes.

One of the most famous recastings in film history involves Claudia Wells in ‘Back to the Future.’ Initially cast as Jennifer Parker, Marty McFly’s girlfriend, Wells was removed because she was taller than Michael J. Fox. Some female executives felt it emasculated the lead character to have a taller girlfriend, leading to her replacement by Elisabeth Shue.

Eric Stoltz is another well-known case. Originally cast as Marty McFly in ‘Back to the Future,’ Stoltz filmed several scenes before producers felt he wasn’t bringing the right comedic tone to the character. Michael J. Fox was their first choice, but his schedule with the TV show ‘Family Ties’ initially made him unavailable. When Stoltz didn’t fit, Fox was brought in.

Stuart Townsend was cast as Aragorn in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,’ but was replaced by Viggo Mortensen after filming a few scenes. Director Peter Jackson decided that Townsend looked too young to convincingly portray the rugged ranger, so Mortensen stepped into the role.

James Remar was originally cast as Corporal Hicks in ‘Aliens’ but was replaced by Michael Biehn after Remar was arrested for drug possession. Director James Cameron opted to make the switch rather than halt production.

Judy Garland was initially set to star in ‘Annie Get Your Gun,’ but health issues and psychological struggles led to her being replaced by Betty Hutton. Garland had completed several musical numbers before her departure.

Kevin Spacey was famously replaced by Christopher Plummer in ‘All the Money in the World’ after allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced. Director Ridley Scott decided to reshoot all of Spacey’s scenes rather than release the film with the tainted actor.

Samantha Morton was cast as the voice of Samantha in ‘Her.’ Director Spike Jonze replaced her with Scarlett Johansson during post-production because he felt Johansson brought a different energy to the role. Every line was re-recorded.

Harvey Keitel had been cast as Captain Willard in ‘Apocalypse Now,’ but was replaced by Martin Sheen after a week of filming. Director Francis Ford Coppola felt Keitel was miscast and that Sheen would be a better fit for the role.

Dougray Scott was originally slated to play Wolverine in ‘X-Men,’ but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with ‘Mission: Impossible 2.’ This paved the way for Hugh Jackman, who became iconic in the role.

Kel O’Neill was initially cast as Eli Sunday in ‘There Will Be Blood.’ However, director Paul Thomas Anderson felt O’Neill wasn’t able to bring the necessary intensity to the role, replacing him with Paul Dano.

Jean-Claude Van Damme was cast as the Predator in ‘Predator,’ but was replaced after production began because he found the suit too cumbersome and problematic. Kevin Peter Hall took over the role.

Annette Bening had originally been cast as Catwoman in ‘Batman Returns,’ but due to her pregnancy, she was replaced by Michelle Pfeiffer, who went on to deliver a memorable performance.

Terrence Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle in the ‘Iron Man’ series due to contract disputes and reported conflicts with the lead actor, Robert Downey Jr. Cheadle continued as James Rhodes in subsequent films.

Nicole Kidman was set to star in ‘Panic Room,’ but a knee injury forced her to step down. Jodie Foster, already a Hollywood heavyweight, came in to take her place and the film became a success.

Judy Davis had been cast in the role of Judy Garland in the biopic ‘Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows,’ but dropped out due to stress and anxiety. Tammy Blanchard then stepped into the part.

Stuart Townsend makes the list again—he was cast as Fandral in ‘Thor.’ However, a week before filming began, he was replaced by Joshua Dallas due to rumored creative differences.

Ryan Gosling was initially cast in ‘The Lovely Bones’ but was replaced by Mark Wahlberg. Gosling had gained weight for the role without consulting the director, Peter Jackson. Jackson wanted the character to have a different look.

Lastly, Shelley Duvall was set to play Wendy Torrance in the movie ‘The Shining,’ but after some initial rehearsals, she was reportedly replaced by Shelley Duvall due to disagreements with director Stanley Kubrick, although official statements often attribute the change to ‘creative differences.’

These instances highlight the volatility and pressure within the film industry. Behind every recasting, there is a story of artistic vision clashing with reality, and sometimes, the end result is better for it. For these actors, being replaced was not an end but a transformation, leading them to different roles and opportunities in their careers.
